88th Academy Awards: Best Animated Feature Nominees. My Ranking.

Go here for my analysis of the Best Picture nominees.

Here's what I think about the Best Animated Feature nominees for the upcoming 88th Academy Awards. In order of preference:

1. Inside Out

Inside Out is the best movie that Pixas has done in years. It is the one of the best, if not the best, depictions of depression in movies, and it is hugely affecting. I still cry to Bingbong's sacrifice, even up to now. (Grade: 5/5)

2. Boy and The World

Boy and the World is slow to start but it grows and grows until it becomes a huge animated marvel. I like how it presents its stance against capitalism and industrialism in a simple package. A lot of of the themes, like environmentalism, innocence and the power of music, also resonate even after the credits roll. (Grade: 5/5)

3. When Marnie Was There

It is beautiful to look at but the story is not engaging enough. It's a weak showing from Studio Ghibli. (Grade: 3/5)

4. Shaun the Sheep

Fun but generic. (Grade: 3/5)

5. Anomalisa

Joyless, confusing and torturous. Interesting ideas but could have been executed better. (Grade: 1/5)

Should Win: Inside Out
Runner-Up: Boy and The World
Dark Horse to Win: Boy and The World
No Chance, Ever: Anomalisa
